A patio is an outdoor extension of a house. Though typical furnishing such as chairs, tables and a few plants are standard for decorating a patio, you can further dress up your patio by using more creative touches throughout. Dressing up a patio is a way to express your sense of style. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
- 1
Choose a color scheme for the patio. Select colors comforting to you and similar to those used indoors if the patio is attached to or visible from the house. Gather paint and fabric swatches if you are having a difficult time deciding between color schemes.
2Add or change chair cushions for all seating areas. Use cushions for benches, dinner-table seating, porch swings and bar stools. Opt for a patterned fabric which includes the colors you have chosen for the patio.
3Use a coordinating table cloth for the main table. Add or replace the umbrella if you use or want one. Use a market-style umbrella in a solid color matching the cushions.
4Lay down outdoor-rated carpeting. Use neutral shades such as beige, tan or cream to match the color scheme. Avoid dark carpet that makes the space look smaller.
5Hang drapes from ceiling rafters or window frames. Use sheer panels in light shades such as white or cream to allow light to flow through into the patio. Sheer panels add an element of drama to a patio when the wind blows and the panels blow in the breeze.
6Add a wooden or rattan ceiling fan if you have wiring available in a ceiling area. Opt for a light-colored fan to keep the area looking wide and open.
7Change plant containers to more decorative versions such as those covered in mosaic tile or painted in one of the main decorating colors used in the patio area.
8Use color-coordinated dinner plates, bowls, cups, glasses and pitchers. Store beverage items in a wrought-iron beverage cart to bring a sense of comfort to the patio.
9Place candles, bowls of potpourri and framed pictures around the patio. Use spaces such as window ledges, coffee tables, side tables and free-standing racks to add decorative touches reminiscent of how you decorate indoors.
