You want to host a spectacular baby shower and that means you are bypassing the store-bought potato chips and cookies. Whether you have hours to cook or only minutes, there are several snacks you can make that will appeal to all who attend the shower. Before you begin writing down baby shower snack ideas, ask the mom-to-be if she is sensitive to any particular smells. Does this Spark an idea?
Shrimp and Lobster
Serve visually appealing appetizers, like shrimp, on a rosemary skewer. Marinate de-veined shrimp in lemon juice and zest, olive oil, black pepper and salt for an hour. Wrap the shrimp around rosemary skewers and grill for about three minutes on each side. Another dish you can make is lobster rolls with a twist. Stir together mayonnaise, lemon zest, lemon juice, celery, shallot, tarragon and lobster pieces in a bowl. Season the mixture with salt and pepper. Slit breadsticks lengthwise and fill with the lobster salad mixture.
Wrapped Vegetables
Make a colorful display out of vegetables which have been wrapped with different meats. You can wrap cooked asparagus spears with strips of ham. Dress the spears with olive oil, lemon zest, salt and pepper. Or wrap thin strips of steak around small bundles of scallions. Thread a toothpick through the meat to hold it in place. Brown the meat-covered bundles then brush them with a mixture of soy sauce, sake and sugar. Arrange the caramelized meat on a platter.
Sweet Treats
Sure there will be cake, but offer guests an alternative by making miniature apple butterscotch or sweet potato cookies. Another option would be to bake 3-inch sugar cookie cutouts and cover them with a cream cheese fruit dip. Top the cookies with freshly sliced strawberries, kiwi fruit, raspberries and blackberries. Or use a medium-sized melon baller to scoop pineapple, lime and orange sherbet into wine glasses. Finish the dessert with an added splash of color by placing a mint leaf on top of the sherbet.
Salty Handfuls
Set out a few different salty snacks that can be eaten by the handful as guests mingle. Toss clean pumpkin seeds in vegetable oil and bake for about 15 minutes before seasoning them with taco seasoning or salt. If you would prefer to serve a snack mix, combine thin butter pretzels with cheddar and Parmesan cheese flavored snack crackers and cashews. Or you can offer your guests popcorn that has been seasoned with butter, salt and fresh rosemary and thyme.
