When you're stuck with hand-me-down furniture, or having to make do with thrift store finds, you don't always get to pick the style you end up with. You have to put your television somewhere, though, and a plain TV table is better than nothing at all. But even the cheapest pieces can be dressed up to fit into any interior design scheme with a little time and a few decorating tips. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
- 1
Wash the entire TV stand with a mild detergent to ensure a clean starting surface. Rinse, dry thoroughly and wipe with a dry rag to remove any residual dust or particles.
2Lightly sand any shiny surfaces, such as laminate or polyurethane tops. This makes for better paint adhesion.
3Choose an appropriate primer and paint to dress up your plain TV table, as there are many types meant for plastic, wood or laminate. Ask the staff at your local hardware, home improvement or paint store if you are unsure of what type to buy.
4Prime and paint the piece according to the manufacturer's instructions. This varies greatly between companies, so follow all of the steps and allow for drying times between coats accordingly.
5Add hand-painted designs that mesh with the rest of the room's decorating scheme. Use a stencil if you are not comfortable with freehand painting.
6Change out the knobs and drawer pulls if your TV stand has them. This is one of the quickest ways to change any furniture piece's appearance.
7Use a large scarf, or cut material, to cover up TV stands that do not have doors. Create a custom curtain if you are handy with a needle and a thread, or use simple hot glue or staples to attach the material right under the edges to hide movie case clutter.
8Consider adding gemstones or charms along the edges of the TV table when dressing it up. Trim out the fabric if you are using some with whimsical shapes or just add more sparkle to the painted surface.
